Where Your Money Goes
Here is a summary of the projects that Equal Weight has funded recently. These are best understood in the context of the organisations that implement them.
Operation Tender Care was an initiative set up under the auspices of the Society for the Upliftment of the Needy (SUN) to train village women in reproductive health and childbirth in the Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh. This led to the establishment of community health workers in the seven villages in which the programme took place. Also under SUN, we funded the construction of four multi-purpose community centers.
We recently gave a £1,000 grant to Maternity Worldwide, based in Brighton, to send a volunteer to Gimbie, Ethiopia for six months to train local midwives.
We recently gave a £1,000 grant to CRUES, based in Bangarapet, towards a computer terminal. Bangarapet is about thirty miles from Bangalore; the Silicon Valley of India. The computer terminal is intended to enable young people from rural communities the chance to be part of India's technological revolution.
Through the agency of Villages in Partnership, based in the Mahbubnagar district of Southern Andhra Pradesh, we gave £1,000 to help cover the cost of materials and furnishings for a 'home for the orphaned elderly'.
We gave a £1,000 grant to the Eubkya Women's project in Eastern Uganda to set up a number of womens' self help groups and to provide training and micro-finance to enable members to set up small enterprises.
