I visited CRUES (Comprehensive Rural Upliftment and Educational Society) in 1991. It is located on the outskirts of Bangarapet, a small town that is about an hour's train ride from Bangalore, Southern India. The organisation has done a considerable amount of outreach work in local villages in getting women to form cooperatives, offering education and job training, as well as promoting awareness of health issues and social and political entitlements. In addition, Mr and Mrs. Premanand Thambi have opened up their home to a number of the neediest children in these communities and brought them up as members of their own family.
I visited SUN (Society for the Upliftment of the Needy) in 2001. Mr Patthipati, himself a Dalit (member of the 'untouchable' castes) set up the organisation to help the community he comes from which is situated in the remote Kammam district of Andhra Pradesh. The work of the organisation centers around the provision of informal primary schools for Dalit children and the formation of womens' self-help groups, through which activities such as micro-enterprise and health education take place.
